Friday Book Project {I Will Never Not Ever Eat A Tomato!}

I've talked about this book before on my blog. It's a really good book that gets kids to think differently about their foods using their imaginations.

For dinner we decided to make cloud fluff, ocean nibblets, moonsquirters, orange twiglets, and green drops!

As we were eating, I read the story out loud. Whenever Lola tried the various foods, so did everyone in our family. We all ate them at the same time. It was pretty neat. Maelyn said that she only likes her green drops when they are mixed in cloud fluff.

*Another activity to go with this book would be to have the kiddos cut foods out of the grocery ads. Next, have them decide what foods they will never not ever eat and paste them onto a paper. They can think of cool names to call those foods.*

Let's Go Fly A Kite...!

These kites are super adorable!
I had the kids peel the paper off of old crayons, while I made a kite pattern. I then used a copier and copied that pattern onto 3 other cardstock papers. With an Exacto kinfe, we cut the middle parts out of the cardstock kite.
I got a handtowel and put it on top of our ironing board. I then put a long piece of waxed paper on top of the towel.
With a knife, you can use a grater as well, I cut the crayons into tiny pieces. I just grate them on top of the waxed paper. Fold the waxed paper in half. With the iron set on low, I ironed the crayons inside the waxed paper. The kids picked out what colors they wanted for their own kites.
We then put double sided tape onto the kite cardstock and attached the waxed crayon paper. The kids cut the remaining waxed paper that was outside of the kite pattern. With a hole punch, we punched holes in the bottom of the kites. The kids picked out what color yarn to put in the hole of their kites and then taped them to the window!
They have been singing "Let's Go Fly A Kite" since we hung them up!

*To use this idea in a classroom, you can also use clear contact paper and tissue paper squares for the middle part*

Muffin Tin- Rainbow Theme

Muffin Tin Monday was a rainbow theme this week.
We decided to make rainbows out of our food.
In the tin: rainbows cut out of bread, peanut butter, bananas, rainbow marshmallows, strawberries and grapes.

The kids each got to make their own rainbow.
I didn't realize how funny it looks with a Zoo Pal plate until looking at the picture!

Noe made rainbow ice cubes and then poured clear Kool-Aide into their cups!

Our guinea pig had a muffin cup also!

Cardboard Crosses

Repost from 2007
Mommy cut out crosses from cardboard, then the kids got to paint them. They added jewels onto them with glue. When the glue dried, I punched a hole at the top and put a ribbon through.
We left these up in our entryway for months after Easter. They just brought a smile to my face and reminded me of Jesus everytime I looked at them.

{Penguins}

I have a 3 year old calling herself Patience Penguin and wanting to make some penguin projects over here at our house.

So, naturally, we did!
My husband came back from a two week trip and helped the kids with this project one day and then the next day, the other project below. It was fun to watch them with Daddy doing projects.

I saw these handprint penguins months back at Just For Fun.

These are paper towel roll penguins (cut roll in half).

My grandparents are members of the National Wildlife Federation. They get all these awesome magazines for kids and give them to us. We received one on Penguins that was really neat. It had a song that we sung, poems, pictures of penguins, these towel paper roll penguins, and a recipe for iceberg cookies.

My iceberg cookies did not turn out! They were meringues and I have no clue why they didn't turn out, but I had to throw the entire batch away. I think next year, I'll make white chocolate macademia cookies and call them icebergs.
A really good Penguin book that the kids and you will love!

{Bunny Money} Eggs

Easter is just around the corner and I wanted to share the way that we do Easter Eggs in our family.
Years ago, we came up with something called Bunny Money.
Our kids were getting so much candy between the eggs, Grandma, church, school... that we decided to not put candy in their plastic Easter Eggs.
We made some Bunny Money and put those in their plastic eggs.

{You have permission to copy these, enlarge them, print them}

After the kids find all the plastic eggs, they open them up and count how much Bunny Money they got.
They then get to buy items from our Bunny Store.
We set up a table with price lists and tons of prizes from the $1 store.

They shop away!

{Leprechauns} visited our home.....

The Kindergarteners where we live have Leprechauns come into the classroom and mess it all up. I thought it would be fun to do it at home.
Last night I messed up the furniture. Everything has a specific place in our home, so I put things backwards and crooked and upside down. I left gold coins and gold chocolates where the Leprechaun had been.
The first thing I made sure to do was to move a big item in the kids room such as a chair, desk, or kitchen toy to where it wasn't supposed to be and put treats on it.
The kids woke up and the first thing they said was "Who moved my stuff?"

The sneaky little Leprechaun messed up the house but left treats in their shoes before they left.
Another thing the Leprechaun did was go potty in their toliet. He had green pee and didn't flush! Maelyn laughed so hard this morning. Patience kept saying that it was so "disgusting!" She wouldn't go to the restroom all day in her bathroom.
Gourmet Mom on the Go posted a lunch idea for the kids. I made these lunches the night before, so when we were looking around the messy house this morning I was able to say "Look I made you special lunches for today. Oh my goodness, it looks like the Leprechauns took a bite of your sandwiches and left footprints on your plates!" Needless to say, when the kids took theirs to school (the blue plates are tupperware with snap lids) they were the talk of the entire lunch room. Everyone has been talking about the Leprechauns that ate their lunch!

Playdough..!

The Spring weather is absolutely wonderful here in California. We've been taking walks and riding bikes and just having a grand time outside.
Today the kids played playdough outside for about an hour and a half.
Apparently, they played on top of the table!

Sneaky Little Leprechauns.

Today we tried to catch a Leprechaun so he can tell us about the pot of gold.
We set up a trap and lead him in with green marshmallows {Momma isn't a very good trap maker. Daddy isn't around right now, so this had to do.}

The sneaky, little Leprechaun took the marshmallows and left his magical dust everywhere instead.

He also left a treat of Lucky Charms because they're magically delicious!

BIG Helper.

This morning before school, Maelyn was making herself a waffle for breakfast and decided she would make everyone one.
This was how the counters looked when I walked into the kitchen!
She wrote everyone's names and how they liked their waffles. I can't believe she even remembered. My husband doesn't even know that!
I told Patience "Go look in the kitchen. Someone made you breakfast!"
She said "Dad came home and made me breakfast!" {Dad's gone on a work trip}
I said "No, Maelyn made you a special breakfast."
Patience said "SWEET! That's so sweet Mama!"

Rainbow Writing....

Rainbow writing is a technique that allows the kids to practice tracing and writing a letter or word- over and over. Usually that may be boring or repetitive for children, but they seem to really like doing it this way.
I will write a letter- or word such as their name, with one color crayon. They take another color crayon and trace all the letters. They then take another color and trace over the other colors. Repeat with lots of colors!
One of my daughters is a visual learner, so this technique helps her tremendously because sometimes just saying the sounds doesn't work for her.
